June Recap

Just shy of another one-hundred hours outside during June...

It was a pretty epic month for being outside this month. We spent a lot of time in the garden, tidying it up, which both boys helped do, playing in all formats, but especially with water and sand. The Cub got a new bike, so we have done a few trips to Nannie's and back on that, as well as far too many to count trips up and down the driveway! We took a walk to the park and landed the same time as the gardeners coming to cut the grass, which the boys thought was epic - it was like free entertainment. They asked for snacks and sat and watched them on the ride-on mower for ages before deciding that they wanted to go because it was a little loud.
We made it back to the caravan where we went for a daily walk on the beach. Both boys are happy to just wander and look for rocks and sea glass and we spent an easy hour or more every day just walking home from town. Nannie also got new furniture for the decking at the caravan, which was perfect for snuggling on in the evenings and reading before bed. They dragged a blanket out there because it wasn't that warm, but they were determined, every night we were there.

A lot of our trips out during June were outdoors too. We went out with the home ed community a couple of times, meeting up in Gulliver's Valley, Cannon Hall Farm where we got a guided tour to learn about the animals, and a playdate style meet up in Sherwood Pines. We'd done beaches in Scotland where the holiday ran over the end of the month before, and obviously spent time in Withernsea. Plus, we met up with friends at the splash park on one of the really hot days so that we could all stay cool in the sun!
The boys and I used our annual passes for another visit to the Wildlife Park where we got a great view of the giraffes, The Cub's favourite, while we sat and ate ice creams in the sun, and we made it out to the home education day at Boston Park Farm where we learned all about the farm in Summer. Bear got to see a sheep being sheared, how the donkeys malted, how they bale hay and a look at how the potato plants were growing.

As for learning, when I started to put this post together, I wondered what I would include in this compilation, because in my head we hadn't sat down and done much "formal learning", but when I started looking through the photos, I realised just how much we had accomplished!
We have done numbers in the form of flashcards to match up different versions of a number, we looked at a 100 square to move on to numbers above 10. We played a card game which includes ordering planets, so as well as using the numbers we were looking at the planets and facts about them. We did some science in the form of gardening, planting sunflowers, making measuring sticks and following their growth, and then bug hunting afterwards.
We read so many books this month, and Bear has taken an interest in non-fiction books. He's always like fact books, but the last few times we have visited the bookshop, he has picked up Usborne Look Inside, lift-the-flap books which we have read and learned new things! We have a new penpal, which we had received our first letter from at the start of the month and we wrote back, including some drawings and a craft... I may write a separate post on this... where Bear practiced writing his name.
There was just one worksheet left in our This Bear Can Read package which we finished off at the start of the month, and we reread the books included. I need to work out a way of reusing the books from the packages as they have ended up on a shelf and not really picked up again as Bear is associating them with the learning work rather than as just reading books...
And lastly, I included the photo of him reading a map, as on our visit to the Wildlife Park, he asked to read the map, so I showed him the first time, how to find where we were, looking at the animals and then following the lines for the paths to get to the next thing, and he did absolutely amazing, working out where we were, where we'd come from and where he wanted to take us next. It just shows that letting them lead can really boost the speed at which they learn as he picked this up so quickly.

The Cub has also started joining in with some activities, and is learning to match. He can match colours and do simple jigsaws, which he loves to do one-on-one, to show off his skills. He also loves playing games with me and Bear, all-be-it, in his own way, as he is very young to be following many rules.

And lastly, our epic fail of a focus book of the month - Bear showed no interest in my choice for June, and after finally convincing him to read it once, he never asked for it again. Usually, he has picked them up over and over again, loving the story basket and other activities I have tried to plan around the book, this time though, I just hadn't picked right... so, I have my fingers crossed for July's choice!

What did you get up to during June?
